Humpback Whale Migration

I made this map and painted its illustrations for the final project of an introductory cartography course at UW-Madison.

The map uses NOAA’s monthly abundance model to explore the migration patterns of the West Indies humpback whale population segment. I found the data for this map compelling because the modeling was based on observed acoustic data. In other words, researchers recorded whale sounds and figured out how to translate them into geospatial data.
